The legal legacies of slavery and empire
The UK's laws and constitution draws heavily on the past and tradition for its legitimacy and authority. Magna Carta, signed in 1215, is often cited as a justification for trial by jury. But as lawyers, we do better at remembering some events than others. We will explore the operation of colonial corporations, and how the UK's involvement in the slave trade has continued to shape the country's laws well into the 21st century.

‘Stop the boats’ or ‘Everything’s broken’?
Просмотров 3614 дней назад
‘Stop the boats’ - is it necessary to control our borders, or just more evidence that in Britain, after 14 years of Austerity, ‘everything’s broken’? Before even one flight has departed, millions have been spent in Rwanda, while the 100,000 asylum-seekers in the UK are left in ‘limbo’, and new legal challenges issued every day. How did we get here? Is there a better way?

    Didn't Pope Innocent III annul the magna carta the same year it was written and have King John cede all the land, goods and chattels (people) to the Pope under threat of excommunication hence the nickname John 'Lackland' Plantagenet? The people have no constitution, that's reserved by the Crown Inc.

    A very helpful video, thank you! However, I am curious. I am extremely certain that there was an older video that was removed and replaced by this one, also explaining the importance and benefits of studying a critical law degree at Kent, and personally I enjoyed that one more as it was explained by one of your female lecturers(or professors) who went into great detail about what the course entails (she wore glasses and had an American accent). Is there any way that I could see the video again, or alternatively, could the video be re-uploaded onto this channel? Thank you!

      Great to know you've found this helpful - the older video you refer to features our former Head of School Professor Didi Herman discussing the benefits of studying law at a critical law school. You can watch it again at: ruclips.net/video/IB7NSaTfi70/видео.html

    I've been looking at law schools and Kent does seem to be amazing. I am curious though as to what the assessment weighing is like? Is it 50/50 between exams and essays or does it lean more towards one type of assessment over another? In addition, can students study modules in the third year that aren't listed on the university website?

    • @KentLawSchool
      @KentLawSchool 6 лет назад

      Hello JBW - thanks for your interest in Law at Kent. To answer your questions... assessments methods for each module vary - some core modules may be assessed as: 100% coursework but most are assessed with a combination of coursework AND examination. An indication of module choices at Kent Law School is available on the course listing for Law LLB (M100) at: www.kent.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/177/law#structure and you can see further information about the assessment methods for each module by clicking on each of the links. For students studying our three-year Law LLB degree (UCAS course code M100), 30 credits of second-year modules (and all 120 credits of final-year modules) are options which you select from among a broad range available at the Law School. And in both your second and final year, 30 credits of modules (ie either one 30 credit module OR two 15 credit modules) can be ‘wild’ modules chosen from among a very large selection offered by other Schools within the University. I hope that's helpful but please feel welcome to contact us if you'd like to know more - you can email us at admissionslaw@kent.ac.uk
